Spanish National Institute for Agricultural Research Strengthens Cooperation with Georgia’s Agricultural Sector

In a significant step towards enhancing agricultural ties, Vasil Babluani and DeRaza Iberico jointly organized a visit by the Spanish National Institute for Agricultural, Food, and Technological Research (INIA) to Georgia. This visit marked a new chapter in the collaboration between the two countries in the agricultural sector, particularly focusing on the livestock industry.

Meetings and Key Discussions

During the visit, representatives from INIA met with Yuri Nozadze, Deputy Minister of Environmental Protection and Agriculture of Georgia, and Levan Ujmajuridze, Director of the Agricultural Scientific Research Center. These meetings were an opportunity to explore the potential for further collaboration between Georgia and Spain in the development of Georgia’s agricultural and livestock sectors.

The delegation toured several key facilities, including the National Food Agency, the Agricultural Laboratory, and the bases of the Agricultural Scientific Research Center in Tsilkani and Jighaura. Discussions focused on the current state of Georgia’s agricultural sector and the opportunities for advancing livestock farming through the implementation of innovative technologies and practices.

A Focus on Livestock Sector Development

“We need to analyze and identify areas where we can cooperate, improve quality, and increase profits in the agricultural sector,” said Manuel Lainez, Director of INIA. Both sides made presentations outlining their primary activities and future goals. The Georgian side shared insights into the current situation of the livestock sector, emphasizing its growth potential.

The discussions were centered on the possibilities for enhancing cooperation and improving the quality and profitability of livestock farming. This collaboration would help Georgia build a more sustainable and modern agricultural sector.

Signing of the Memorandum of Cooperation

A major outcome of the visit was the signing of a Memorandum of Cooperation between the Agricultural Research Center of Georgia and the INIA Research Center. This memorandum outlines a series of actions aimed at improving Georgia’s agricultural practices, including the development of joint research projects, the organization of training programs, and the exchange of scientific and technical information.

Levan Ujmajuridze explained the significance of the agreement, noting:
“Within the framework of the memorandum, young specialists will be sent to study at leading scientific research institutions in Spain, breeding activities will be developed, modern approaches to artificial insemination will be introduced, laboratory capabilities will be expanded, as well as joint scientific research and projects will be implemented to protect and preserve genetic resources. This will contribute to the sustainable development of agriculture in Georgia.”

A Promising Future for Georgia’s Agriculture

The cooperation between Georgia and Spain, as demonstrated by this visit, lays a strong foundation for future advancements in the agricultural and livestock sectors. The Memorandum of Cooperation ensures that both sides will work together to improve breeding techniques, preserve genetic resources, and introduce new technologies to enhance the sustainability of Georgia’s agricultural industry.

This partnership marks a significant milestone in Georgia’s agricultural development and promises to boost the country’s competitiveness in the global market.
